Decoy flares are pyrotechnic devices that produce heat upon ignition. These are usually used in the military or defense systems to distract or divert the incoming missile attack. They are usually composed of magnesium or another bot-burning metal, with almost equal burning temperature or higher than engine exhaust. These aerial infrared countermeasures are generally used by an airplane or helicopter to counter infrared homing air-to-missile or surface-to-air missiles.
