The protein that this gene encodes is a member of the thioredoxin (Trx) system and of the pyridine nucleotide-disulfide oxidoreductase family. Mammals contain three different isozymes of thioredoxin reductase (TrxR). Thioredoxins and other substrates are reduced by selenocysteine-containing flavoenzymes called TrxRs, which are essential for maintaining redox homeostasis. This gene produces the cytosolic version of TrxR, which is widely expressed and forms an active site homodimer with FAD and selenocysteine (Sec). The UGA codon, which typically indicates the end of translation, encodes Sec.
